Remember when the mullet was a fashion statement, rather than a faux pas?

When a blue Fosters can was the beer of choice, the first sign of CUB creeping in on the WA market? When tight shorts were part of a uniform that saw jumpers tucked in and socks pulled up?

They may well be a distant memory, but a bunch of blokes who will gather at Charles Riley Reserve on Saturday will be reminiscing about all those things…and more.

For they were the pioneers of the North Beach Football Club. A group of young blokes who claimed the first ever premiership in that distinctive red and yellow jumper.  And on Saturday they will celebrate the 40th anniversary of that B Colts premiership.

Mullets might now be more of a dream than a reality for many of them, who have seen the hairline recede beyond the dome. And if they’re wearing tight shorts, it would be more to do with a widening girth than anything else.

But they will be the central plank in an important day at the club, the annual past players’ day which will also see the 2005 A-Grade premiership team celebrate the 10th anniversary of their triumph.

As the Beach hosts Wesley Curtin in an important fixture at the club’s refurbished base, it is also Gary Tait Day, with coach of the B Colts premiership in 1975, Bob Aitken, presenting the medal to the player adjudged to be best afield.
