Kingsway jump Beach early
The sense of anticipation, the excitement of a new beginning…and then bang! The expectations of how the day would unfold were blown out of the water by a slick Roos outfit that played with energy and precise ball use on their way to a 57-point victory – 14.12 (96) to 5.9 (39).
They opened with a dominant first quarter, kicking 5.5 and keeping the Beach scoreless so the game was virtually out of reach at quarter time barring an exceptional change in the match.
That did not happen and the Beach, who had produced encouraging pre-season form, were unable to rein in their hosts.
Ruckman Sam Hampshire, in his first game for the club, made an impressive start while similar could be said of Patty Ambrose who provided a target at centre half-forward and finished off his work with two goals.
The Lifenet A-Reserves, in what would be indicative of later events, suffered a rare loss at the hands of Kingsway.
The Beach has long been the benchmark of the reserves competition and Kingsway have traditional found their depth wanting but produced a solid performance to win by eight points – 9.5 (59) to 7.9 (51).
The Beach started slowly and couldn’t really get their game going. They matched them at the contest, but their spread and skills were second best on the day.
Kingsway kicked away at the end of the second quarter, and well into the third, establishing a six goal lead by three-quarter time. North Beach, to their credit, didn’t go down without a fight, and controlled the tempo in the last quarter and got the margin back down to eight points.
Veterans Jarrad Chapman and Christian Bottechia were the standout performers on the day. Justin Prior, Dylan Campbell and Ben Perkin stood up in the last quarter to help mount the comeback while Caolan O’Connell played with trademark commitment.
The Plasterwise Phil Scott Colts started their season emphatically with a 121-point dissection of the Roos.
Led by Mitch Rowell, who kicked seven goals, in a dominant team performance the Beach marched home 18.14 (122) to just 0.1 (1).
This week presents another opportunity for all teams against traditional rivals University and they will be up for that challenge at Charles Riley Reserve.

Threes, fours dominate Warnbro
The North Beach lower grades opened the season in fine style, headlined by the third and fourth grade teams who humbled Warnbro.
A very different looking Hybrid Linings C3-Grade put their stamp on the game from the outset, kicking the first three goals. Although Warnbro closed the gap to 21 points at the main break, it felt like a matter of time until the dam walls broke.
After half-time, the Beach did just that by ramping up the pressure and in conjunction with their quality of play and superior skills and fitness, they blew the opposition out of the water with a 10 goal to two second half.
Across half forward Jamie Bennett was everywhere and his ball use was a highlight as he consistently wheeled onto his left foot and delivered with precision. Nathan Adler appreciated the silver service and starred in front of goals with five and was ably supported by Craig Hall, Cal O’Shea and Jonas Rocke (two goals apiece).
Tyler Beard played his first game for the Club since Colts and was outstanding across half back, consistently intercepting Wanbro’s forward forays and rebounding with skill. Conail McCarthy and Cam Emery also proved impassable in the defensive 50 and were part of a very good unit that gave up just four goals for the game.
The Beast Carpet Cleaning C3-Reserves were similarly dominant, slicing through Warnbro to win
21.17 (143) to 1.1 (7).
They dominated through the midfield and both Campbell Howie and Levi Cooper capitalised on the opportunities to kick 12 goals between them.
The Indian Ocean Hotel Brett Jones Colts capped a good day for the colts cruising past Wanneroo by 73 points.
The Beach controlled the game throughout to win 14.11 (95) to 3.4 (22).
Cooper Bartlett kicked four goals and found a scoring ally in Reece Anderson (three) while Olli Muir, Toby McDonald, Dylan Brimson and Jake Ainsworth were also outstanding.
The Progressive Materials E2-Grade had a tough start against Kalamunda while the GJ Osplumb E3- Grade found Kingsway a little too polished.

The North Beach women, in a freshly tweaked format that sees A-Grade and A-Reserves teams as part of the competition structure, ran headlong into one of the benchmarks of female football in the opening round.
University has been a formidable force since the introduction of the competition in the PFL and they proved too strong in both grades.
While the Hillarys Beach Club A-Grade women showed signs of the brand of football they are looking to implement, they were not able to do it consistently enough and fell to the Scholars 5.3 (33) to 2.3 (15).
Despite the loss there were some positives, including the introduction of several fresh faces who have the capacity to have a strong impact at the club both this season and in the longer term.
It was a similar tale for the Hair Affair A-Reserves Women who found University too classy and composed, with the hosts proving too strong and winning
6.5 (41) to 2.2 (14).
One of the positives of the day was the unity created by having all players and support staff at the same venue, rather than splitting resources which has been the case for a number of years.

Handling disappointment and then mounting a response was always going to place the spotlight on the O’Rourke Realty A Grade.
The Beach were out-played in every facet of the game against Kingsway in the opening round and confronting University in the follow-up looked like another daunting prospect.
After an impressive summer and pre-season that had built hope, some of the energy was sucked out of the North Beach faithful with the loss to Kingsway, but they responded with a strong performance against University that was more in tune with the early anticipation.
They jumped University from the first bounce and could have virtually taken the game beyond their opponents’ reach had they been more efficient in front of goal. The yield from 10 scoring shots was 3.7 and clearly on balance of play they deserved a better return.
Joey Deegan led the way through midfield, combining effectively with Sam Hampshire, while Nic Reid (five goals) and Patty Ambrose (three) were dynamic in the forward half. Their flair and polish combined with the grunt work of Steve Mansfield ensured University was constantly under threat.
When University did venture forward it was generally repelled by a miserly North Beach defence led by Alex Johnson. They went on to win 10.15 (75) to 5.4 (34).
The Lifenet A-Reserves started quite well and controlled the first 10 minutes of the game but could not capitalise on the scoreboard.
In the second quarter however, Uni got a roll on kicking with the wind and kicked five goals to one to break the game open, on the way to winning 12.4 (76) to 5.6 (36).
At half time the Beach reassessed, a few changes were made and won the second half, but it's the second successive week that slow start has proven costly.
Ross Carbone was strong as a solo ruck all day, competing well both in the air and most impressively on the ground. Ben Perkin was asked to play multiple roles and performed admirably. Jonas Rocke and Caolan O’Connell were both terrific with their pressure, and really helped to get the Beach into gear in the second half.
The Phil Scott Colts endured a stark contrast in the level of competition, bouncing from a walk in the park against Kingsway to one of the biggest challenges in the league.
University, understandably, always has strong representation at colts level and endured 7.6 (48) to 2.7 (19).
The positive was the way the Beach fought the game out, winning the last quarter.

Ten minute lapse costs third grade
A 10-minute block either side of half-time proved costly for the Hybrid Linings C3-Grade against a seasoned, physical Forrestdale.
Those two five minute lapses proved telling as the North Beach third grade outfit fell to Forrestdale
by 36 points – 10.10 (70) to 5.4 (34).
In that period of the encounter Forrestdale kicked five goals largely due to a drop in intensity and concentration which ended up representing the majority of the final margin.
The upside to all that is the learnings of three graduating colts who made their debuts under fierce heat from a seasoned and aggressive opposition.
Jack O’Gorman continues to present at centre half-forward and once those further up the field get used to looking for him it will make the forward attacks more direct and more successful.
Complementing him were Cal O’Shea across half forward who lit up the first half and continued to work hard all game.
Down back, Ben Sweeny used all of his experience to calm his younger teammates around him and repelled as many sorties as he physically could. Nick Marsh did his absolute best to keep Forrestdale’s most dangerous forward under wraps with a very disciplined performance.
In the midfield, Jake Moreschini used his competitive instincts and natural athleticism to give his midfielders first use of the ball and Blake Sawyer competed hard at ground level.
The Beast Carpet Cleaning C3-Reserves produced a polished display as they won 10.13 (73) to 5.5 (35).
Tom Elliott and Campbell Howie were again prominent in attack, each kicking two goals.
The Progressive Materials E2-Grade found Brentwood Booragoon too formidable while the GJ Osplumb E3-Grade carved out an impressive victory over Quinns Districts after scrambling for numbers during the week.

Emphatic response from the women
The North Beach women’s teams responded emphatically from a disappointing start to the season with a pair of resounding victories on Saturday.
After confronting University, one of the competition benchmarks since the inception of the league, in the opening round, the Beach seized an opportunity in the second round of fixtures against Warnbro Swans.
In a 180 degree turnaround both the Hillarys Beach Club A Women’s and the Hair Affair A-Reserves Women’s teams put some runs on the board with two impressive performances against the Swans.
The A-Reserves set the tone for the day with a comprehensive victory over the scoreless Swans, with Taite Lantzke booting three and ably supported by her teammates with another eight Tigers hitting the scoreboard.
It was a tighter contest in the A Grade, but North Beach’s accuracy in front of goal and rebounding run from the Swans forward 50 the difference as they ran out winners by 12 points.
Tamashya Blurton and Amelie Wood both chipped in for two goals apiece with Tessa Anderson and Shannon Bidstrup winning the clearances from the midfield in a tough contest.
The Beach take on the Melville Rams in the teams’ first meeting since the realignment of the Women’s competition, in what should be two entertaining matches down at Charles Riley Reserve.
