Beach catch-cries a winner

Sally Ford sends the Galleria Toyota A-Grade women forward

“C’mon ladies, let’s get this done…one, two, three Beach.”

It’s not the traditional catch-cry that has resonated around Charles Riley Reserve, but it was indicative of the resolve of the North Beach Galleria Toyota A-Grade women’s attack on their challenge last Saturday.

They confronted an accomplished West Coast women’s outfit on Charles Riley’s northern oval on a day when seven of the club’s teams played on the Beach’s home deck.

The women kicked off proceedings on the second oval and led throughout, before winning 4.6 (30) to 1.6 (12).

The Beach held sway from the outset, largely through the class and efforts of players like Sarah Ford and Sarah Cosoleto through the midfield while Steph Ball and Georgia Diaz were tough in the contests.

Down back Ellen Duncan, Taylisha Brown and Emily Sainty thwarted many opposition moves and up forward Steph Dalton and Lexi Lindsay were ever-threatening.

The Beach held the balance of play for the duration, though West Coast’s Tahlia Smart owned the highlight, gathering the ball inside the forward 50 and taking a couple of bounces before posting her team’s goal seconds before the final siren.

In carving out an authoritative victory, the Beach consolidated a place in the top three.

While the women completed their match in the best of the conditions, the Grange Residential I-Grade completed the heavy schedule in the toughest the weather had to offer, battling teeming rain and squalls against an accomplished Willetton outfit.

Under lights at Chas Riley on a very wet and windy day it was never going to be a pretty game of football!

Kicking with a howling breeze in the first quarter, Willetton peppered the goals looking for their first major, eventually scoring their ice-breaker  halfway through the quarter and controlling the game from that point forward.

North Beach worked tirelessly and never once let up in difficult conditions but lacked the finishing polish of Willeton. Jordan Hill at full back put in a solid performance as did Nick Hart in the middle.

The team as whole are really self-governing out on the field with some leaders starting to really show themselves.
