David Perry…inducted into the WAAFL Hall of Champions

By Gary Stocks
North Beach stalwart David Perry was honoured at the WA Amateur Football League presentation night on Monday when he was inducted into the Hall of Champions.

Perry, who began his career with North Beach in 1985, had a celebrated 93-game career at Charles Riley Reserve where he achieved virtually every distinction possible.

He was WA’s best player in the 1986 national carnival and earned all-Australian selection, capping off his year as the Aitken Medallist and then being runner-up in the North Beach fairest and best award.

In 1987 he was again selected to represent Western Australia, this time as captain, against South Australia. He again won the Aitken Medal, was North Beach’s fairest and best and added the CJ Jamieson Medal, as the WAAFL A-Grade fairest and best.

He repeated the double of the Aitken Medal and A-Grade fairest and best in 1988, was again State captain and earned all-Australian honours after the Hobart carnival and was named the best player of the championships. And in the following year he won his second Jamieson Medal and was an integral part of North Beach’s first A-Grade premiership.

Perry completed his career by playing in another North Beach premiership in 1990.

Tomorrow, North Beach will be hoping to emulate the success that Perry enjoyed throughout his career with four teams playing cut-throat finals.

The Credent Financial Services A-Reserves and the Coast to Coast Imports Phil Scott Colts will be playing at Morris Buzzacott Reserve, while the Cabling Network Solutions D1-Grade and the Red Hill Brett Jones Colts will play at Charles Riley Reserve.

All four teams will have high expectations, having earned top two finishes in the regular season but used that life line last week in qualifying finals.

While, naturally, the colts teams boast some exciting youth, the same could be said for the reserves and thirds and all teams would enjoy some vocal support from the North Beach faithful in their quest to maintain theirs finals assault.
