Beach stalls against rampant CBC
It was like North Beach were driving a pursuit car with no accelerator as they tried to reel in Fremantle CBC at Morrisa Buzzacott Reserve last Saturday.
After CBC kicked the opening goal of the match, the O’Rourke Realty A-Grade outfit responded immediately. But thereafter the Beach machine, try as they might, could find no response.
They hit the pedal but nothing happened; there was the odd burst of life but it stuttered and stalled as CBC proved their masters in a commanding 67-point victory – 16.7 (103) to 4.12 (36).
Utility player Hamish Coulton tried valiantly in a number of different roles, but the consistency of the CBC effort proved insurmountable. In other positives in an otherwise disappointing performance Josh Chapman made a strong return in the ruck, Chris Wells continued his solid form in defence and at the other end of the ground Nic Reid chimed in with three goals from limited supply.
It was a totally different story for the Lifenet A-Reserves who powered their way to a second successive victory, eclipsing CBC 13.6 (84) to 5.4 (34).
Jacob Wheelahan was outstanding up forward with seven goals while Jonas Rocke chimed in with three goals and veteran Ben Sweeney was exceptional in defence.
Experienced A-Grade players Dylan Campbell and Matt Coleman also wielded some influence along with Harry O’Sullivan and Will Dobson.
The day started on a high with the Plasterwise Phil Scott Colts scoring a stirring three-point victory against CBC – 7.7 (49) to 7.4 (46).
After kicking out to an 18-point advantage at three-quarter, the Beach resisted a surge from the host to hold on for an important win away from home. Given the respective ladder positions even at this early stage of the season that could be a crucial result as both teams hunt a place in the finals.
The undefeated University have already kicked away to a two-win advantage with CBC (2nd) and North Beach (3rd) just two of six teams on three wins from the first five rounds. They play another of those teams in the logjam – Ocean Ridge – at Charles Riley Reserve this Saturday.

Ruthless Beach clicks against Hawks
By Gary Stocks
A commitment to be ruthless in the contest proved fruitful as the Hybrid Linings C3-Grade imposed their will over Noranda with a comprehensive victory last Saturday.
The Beach was in command throughout as they posted a comprehensive 24.5 (149) to 4.2 (26) triumph.
Noranda was missing a few players from the last time the two sides met, but the North Beach line-up was also transformed.
While this new-look group had produced some good performances in the first four rounds of the season, they hadn’t quite ‘clicked’ as a team.
But against the Hawks the early signs were good that all players were on the same page and as the game progressed, this became more evident. The team was hungry. The boys were ruthless.
Brody Hinkley played possibly his best game in senior footy with an absolutely dominant performance in the ruck. He not only controlled all the centre bouncedowns and stoppages around the ground with his monopoly on winning the taps, he was able to deliver silver service to his fleet of midfielders.
Dion Cownie was the main beneficiary of Hinkley’s ruck dominance and he got better as the game went on, winning the ball at will and using his pace and fitness to propel the ball forward with purpose.
Up front, the forwards feasted on the service they were getting and none more so than Nathan Adler. He has been in outstanding form this season and capitalised with a nine-goal haul.
Alongside him, experienced campaigners in Craig Hall and Adam Cockie also had a day out kicking five goals each and although Jack O’Gorman didn’t kick a bag, it was his tireless leading and work further up the ground that allowed his three team mates to kick 19 goals between them.
The Beast Carpet Cleaning C3-Reserves were even more clinical in the earlier game, rattling on 24.20 (164) to 1.4 (10) in an ultra impressive display.
Cam Howie continued his brilliant start to the season, capitalising on opportunities flooding from further up the ground to kick seven goals, in what was a comprehensive team performance. Mark Craig and Luke Uglow bagged four goals apiece while Tom Elliott also maintained his good form with three.
The Indian Ocean Hotel Brett Jones Colts found competition benchmark University too tough to crack. Despite a spirited performance they lost by 18 points 8.12 (60) to 6.6 (42).
Dan Carter, Steve Turner, Jeda Rogers, Rhyley Wake, Lachlan Graber and Lewis Meerman were standard bearers for the Beach.
