Skill errors prove costly for Beach

By Gary Stocks

On the Perth Football League website the result from last Saturday’s fixture shows that Ocean Ridge defeated North Beach by three points in the A-Grade battle at Charles Riley Reserve.

In essence that is true. But, with all due respect to the opposition, the O’Rourke Realty A-Grade unit did as much to beat themselves as Ocean Ridge did to win it.

Consistently turning over the ball in terrible positions in the back half and then failing to make the most of opportunities deep in attack combined to see the Eagles endure 8.14 (62) to 8.11 (59).

While some of the turnovers were created by the defensive pressure of the opposition, who set up well behind the ball to lock it in their forward half, a lot of the clangers came from simple skill errors.

The Beach made a bright start to the game kicking the opening four goals of the match but the Eagles chipped away at the advantage and created a second half arm wrestle that saw them in front when it mattered most.

The Beach performance was highlighted by the return of Dylan Campbell who wielded a strong influence, especially in the second half, while Nic Reid continued his stellar form with another five-goal haul despite often being double-teamed.

Jacob Wheelahan also made a strong return to the A-Grade line-up, while Chris Wells, Alec Johnson and Mitch Mackenzie were outstanding in defence.

The effort and endeavour certainly was not lacking and it is a matter of working on the execution of the game plan going forward – starting with the round seven game against Wembley.

The Lifenet A-Reserves racked up a third consecutive victory with an emphatic victory against Ocean Ridge, celebrating the 150th game of Jordan Brooks with a 48-point triumph – 15.10 (100) to 8.10 (58).

The Beach almost played within themselves and were always in control, with Brooks enjoying his milestone game with a five-goal bag.

As usual Caolan O’Connell buzzed around the ground with a lively display, while Jonas Rocke was again a dangerous foil for Brooks, Jackson Martino was solid across half-back and Alex Thompson did a lot of the grunt work around stoppages.

In an important to kick off the day on the main oval, The Plasterwise Phil Scott Colts carried too much fire-power for Ocean Ridge.

Level on points going into the clash the Beach controlled the game after quarter time before winning 16.9 (105) to 3.2 (20). After leading by just two points at the first change, the Beach tightened their defence and their grip on the game conceding just one goal thereafter.

Cas Dunlop was again lively around goals, kicking three goals.

Lower Grades endure thrillers

The lower grades, with the exception of a seriously under-manned Progressive Materials E2-Grade endured a series of tight contests last Saturday, headlined by another strong performance from the Hybrid Linings C3-Grade.

The C3-Grade was opposed to a side with current and ex-WAFL listed players, but the threes fed off the confidence gained from their previous game and played a strong and positive brand of football to record a decisive win against Coolbinia.

Missing a couple of key players, North Beach went in with two players returning from injury and a debutant from last year’s colts team.

They were switched on from the outset kicking six goals straight in the first quarter. On the back of some sublime midfield work done by Dion Cownie and Isaac Seidner resulting in clean exits from the centre bouncedowns, the key targets deep in the forward 50 – Adam Cockie and Craig Hall – were able to capitalise on the quick delivery and kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Coolbinia are a strong team and counter-attacked in the second quarter and the defenders had their hands full. Rebounding positively, young players in Jared Thomson and George Pullinger  led from the front and took on their opponents to run the ball out of defence.

Cal O’Shea played his best game of the season and was a beneficiary of both the winning midfield and the rebounding defence to finish with five goals in a terrific performance.

The Beast Carpet Cleaning C3-Reserves prevailed in a nailbiter against Coolbinia on a day when a name so familiar to the club made a return.

The Quinlan family was strongly represented in senior football for around a decade and Vaughn Quinlan returned from a long absence to be a part of an eight-point victory 11.13 (79) to 11.5 (71).

He announced his return with a couple of important goals, along with Cam Howie and Brayden Quinn.

The Indian Ocean Hotel Brett Jones Colts scoring a thrilling victory over Curtun University-Wesley, eking out an important three-point win – 6.5 (41) to 5.8 (38).

They held a slender three-point lead at the last change and held on to that in a definitive last quarter arm wrestle where both teams scored just one behind.

Outstanding contributions for North Beach came from Tom Caiacob, Lachlan Owen, Harry Corderoy and Mitchel Pielow.

As mentioned previously the Progressive Materials E2-Grade suffered a 111-point defeat with a number of club stalwarts stepping in to ensure the club had enough numbers to field a team.

Among those to answer the SOS were Ryan McGinnity and Adam Thewlis so if there are any past players looking to dust off their boots they would be most welcome.

The GJ Osplumb E3-Grade continued a solid start to the season with an absorbing five point win – 4.9 (33) to 3.10 (28).

Beach women in strong wins

The North Beach women, with a later start to the day, came back from the bye raring to go and it showed with both teams taking home the four points against rival Kingsley.

Playing under hot and humid conditions, but both prevailed in physical matches where all teams left nothing on the park.
It was Umpire’s appreciation round, and after the teams and umpires came together at the start of the match to acknowledge the significant contribution umpires make to our great game it was all business by the Beach as they came out firing from the first bounce.

The challenge from coach Paul Burbridge to the Hair Affair A Reserves to start strongly was clearly heard by the team, as they kicked four goals in the first quarter and set the tone for the match. Great ruck work from Karry Plummer gave the midielders first use of the footy and gained multiple deep forward entries.

Kingsley did challenge in the second half, but some great individual efforts under pressure from defenders Jordan Irvine and Emma Pennefather in the back line repelled any entries to the Beach’s advantage.

With the forward line also starting to gel well with multiple goals to Millie Monaghan, Moana Roberts and Issy Strover and Poppy Burbridge providing key support they always held sway. All in all, a solid performance for the Beach.

The Hillary’s Beach Club A-Grade Women faced a tough challenge from Kingsley, in a low scoring match that was physical and tough under trying conditions.

Kingsley’s defensive shut down style of play troubled the Beach in the first quarter, as they looked to adjust their free running game in order to gain any advantage they could.

Gee Shepherd and Amelie Wood were once again fearless in the midfield, with Sarah Viney showing flashes of class as she returned from a long stint on the sidelines. In a game that was played between the arcs in the first half, it would be the team that broke through the stoppages that would persevere.

Fantastic running work from Charlotte Viney and Ri Dunn through the middle helped propel the Beach forward, but the second half work of Tash Spurr and Charlotte Adams was superb as they complimented the iron defense lead by Beth Carey and Kassie Tyers.

A tough match that saw the Beach come away victors by two points, as they look toward a semi-final rematch with Wembley under lights at Pat Goodridge Reserve.
