Beach come close

By Gary Stocks

All of the grounds that are home to Perth Football League A-Grade clubs have their own peculiar characteristics. Bill Grayden Reserve, the base for Trinity Aquinas, is in a category of its own.

Saucer-like in both shape and size, it is a clear home ground advantage. But it is a venue to which the O’Rourke Realty North Beach A-Grade has traditionally adjusted its game style to suit.

That was the case again on Saturday and while the Beach did not secure the four points, it pushed the ladder leader and was always in the game.

The Beach is a good ‘inside the contest’ team and the small ground suits its combative persona and while it was disappointing to leave empty-handed there were some good moments in the 14-point loss – 12.3 (75) to 9.7 (61).

The Beach started strongly and led by veteran Stephen Mansfield, who is the personification of combative, held a two-point advantage at the first change.

Unfortunately, that opening term also saw leading goal-kicker Nic Reid go down with an ankle shortly after kicking his first goal of the match.

That forced a structural reshuffle with Jacob Wheelahan swinging from the midfield to attack and it proved fruitful as he snared five goals in an outstanding display.

After that strong opening, the Beach continued in that vein in the second term before the Boomers stamped their authority on the contest in the third term, kicking four goals to one.

The Beach came again through the agency of Mansfield, Nic Wells and Lachie Scurria through the midfield, Wheelahan up forward and Dylan O’Dea in defence but the gap proved too big to close.

Beach hurdles Saints in big win

A strong focus on beating a team sitting on top of the ladder proved a power motivator as the North Beach third grade hosted Osborne Park at Charles Riley Reserve on Saturday.

While the Hybrid Linings C3-Grade had been consistent in the first half of the season they felt like they need a big scalp to validate their from. It came. And it came emphatically, as the Beach punched out a sizzling 58-point victory.

After a first quarter arm wrestle they controlled the game to win 12.8 (80) to 3.4 (22).

The Saints arrived at Chas Riley in second spot on the premiership table but left in fourth after being leap-frogged by the Beach and Winnacott.

The was the fallout from the Beach’s best four-quarter performance of the season, outpointing  the opposition in every facet of the game.

Jack Merson took little time to exert an influence on the team with a brilliant performance against the two key forwards and was ably supported by his fellow defenders in Tom Emes and Cam Emery.

Brody Hinkley continued his best season of senior footy with a very strong performance in the ruck against a five point player and with Isaac Seidner and Dion Cownie always at his feet, the Beach Boys were clear midfield winners.

Up front, the tireless Craig Hall continued his stunning goal-kicking form with another four goals while Tully Wickstein put on a clinic of small forward craft in the second half to finish with three goals.

The Beast Carpet Cleaning C3-Reserves were even more dominant, beating Osborne Park by 84 points – 13.19 (97) to 2.1 (13). Clearly the margin could have been even more decisive had they made the most of goalscoring opportunities.

Cam Howie and Tom Elliott again provided strong targets up forward, kicking three goals apiece.

The Indian Ocean Hotel Brett Jones Colts made life difficult for themselves, squandering many gilt-edged opportunities on the way to a 24-point loss to Trinity Aquinas – 1.9 (15) to 5.9 (39).

The Beach matched the Boomers in general play where Tom Caiacob, Jake Ashworth, Jackson Park and Jack Castiglioni were prominent but they were unable to hit the scoreboard in a meaningful way.

The GJ Osplumb E3-Grade continued on their merry way with a 126-point thumping of Osborne Park while Swan Athletic proved too strong for the Progressive Materials E2-Grade.

Women rebound, I-Grade win thriller

It is impossible to change the past, but there is always an opportunity to influence the future.

That was the attitude of the North Beach women’s teams a week after suffering double disappointments at the hands of Wembley.

After twin losses away to the Magpies it was the response both coaches were looking for against Rossmoyne in back-to-back away matches.

The Hair Affair A Reserves Women’s started strongly from the first bounce, with a best on ground performance by ruck Karry Plummer who gave the midfield first use of the footy.

It was a full team effort with solid contributions by all and every player performing to the best of their ability.

The midfield controlled of the match throughout with defenders Meg Jones and Eliza Manuel denying Rossmoyne chances to hit the scoreboard and sending the attack back the Beach’s way.

The forward line honoured the leads coming into the attacking 50, converting their chances with Taite Lantzke kicking three majors and Issy Quinn-Schofield chipping in with two.

The Hillarys Beach Club A Grade Women didn’t have it so easy, with the winless Rhinos belying their bottom of the ladder position to put the physical pressure on the Beach early.

From the get-go, the Rhinos were relentless around the contests with fierce tackles and winning the hard ball which rattled the normally stoic and tough Beach midfield.

The women rallied in the second quarter, but still could not settle into the game and went into the major break eight points down. Stand-in coaches Lou McKenry, Danny Poultney and Mel Plant gave the team some direct goals and focus, which the girls took on board and went out with a big mindset shift determined to take away the points.

It was the instrumental move of Dee McDermott into the backline and Jay Cooper to the midfield that sparked the team’s resurgence, as they led from the front, matching the physicality of Rossmoyne and winning the first use of the ball.
Amelia Davies and Kailey Secomb provided the run from the contest with Shannon Bistrup winning the ruck all over the ground.

In front of goal, Shannon Matthews was pinpoint with her accuracy, kicking four goals in her best game of the season and showing her footy smarts in reading the play.

Kassi Tyers was again strong in defence and the Rhinos were kept to a solitary point after the main break, with the Beach showing mindset and focus can absolutely change the momentum of the game.

The BuildNow I-Grade team played their best game of the season, maybe even of their careers, to pull off a one-point win over Curtin University-Wesley.

While the team started the first half sluggishly, they were not out of the contest and some inspiring speeches at half time reminded them that they were playing to honour the loss of a teammate’s mother and this seemed to spark a fire in the second half.

While this was definitely a whole team, never give up effort, the standout performance had to go to Mailey Kelley who kicked all of the team’s six goals. Mailey showed great skill and composure that in turn really inspired the whole side.

The crowd’s excitement as the team were able to hold off a strong finishing Curtin Uni was fantastic. It was a proud day to be a Beach fan!!
