Tough loss for Beach

By Gary Stocks

First the good news; the club has lost just one game across seven grades in the first two rounds of the WA Amateur Football League season.

Now the bad news; the only defeat the club has tasted in 14 matches came when the O’Rourke Realty A-Grade team failed to deliver the intensity required to win at senior level against Kalamunda last Saturday.

The result from that sub-standard performance was that the Beach was jumped in the first quarter, when Kalamunda kicked four goals in the opening six minutes, and never recovered on the way to a 33-point loss – 8.7 (55) to 14.4 (88).

The subdued Beach never gelled at any point in the contest and will need to work on a more united effort in coming weeks.

Co-captain Anthony Ingham and midfielder Mitch Dwyer tried valiantly, setting a standard others needed to follow, but few did. Young utility player Sam Lamont kicked three goals, defenders Ben Sweeny and Tim Langsford were solid and forward James Lee worked hard, but there were few individual winners.

Conversely, the Credent Financial Services A-Reserves produced a commanding display to win by 82 points and in the process have applied pressure for places in the senior line-up.

Dominant from the outset, Freddie Alone was outstanding with four goals along with Dion Cownie, while captain Steve Bandy offered strong drive off a wing, Brett Lague provided impressive defensive rebound and both Michael Italiano and Ned Melvin were reliable targets up front.

The Coast to Coast Imports Phil Scott Colts did not produce their best football but still managed to find a way to win – the sign of a good team.

In trouble early, the Beach remained committed to the contest – and the game plan – throughout and deserved to eke out an impressive seven-point win – 7.5 (47) to 5.10 (40).

The Cabling Network Solutions D1-Grade dominated throughout, on the way to an 84-point triumph. In such a performance there were dominant players all over the ground and the younger members of the team continue to enjoy the influx of senior teammates.

Ben Heap, Greg Pires and Jake Robinson were among those who offered direction to recent colts graduates who are developing their knowledge of the game.

The Hybrid Linings D1-Reserves were another team that obliterated the opposition – emphasising the depth of talent at the club – with a 20-goal victory over Kalamunda.

With key forwards Michael Bramley and Byron Boys kicking 11 goals between them and Jordan Kickett chiming in with three of his own, Kalamunda simply had no answers.

In addition, midfielder Brett Rice was in outstanding touch, while young ruckmen Ryan Clapham and Harry Byrne, gave the Beach first use of the ball.

The Brett Jones Colts played a solid four-quarter game against Collegians, a club renowned for their depth of under-age talent, and produced a masterful 53-point victory.

After eclipsing the opposition in the first half, the Beach bult on the acsendancy and won 10.16 (76) to 3.5 (23).

The Express Bins E2-Grade completed the lower grade ascendancy with a pulsating victory against West Coast.

Trailing for most of the day, the Beach stayed in the contest, worked their way in front in the middle of the last term and then chalked up a 19-point triumph – 10.2 (62) to 6.7 (43).

That success came on the back of a brilliant seven-goal last quarter where Josh Stretch, Brett Anthony, James Winterton, Dan Mellor and Mike Missikos were outstanding while Novak Smith hammered home five goals.
